Empowering Users in Public Procurement 

User Involvement, Work Environment, and AI in Practice

Workshop at NordiCHI 2026 – 3 October (Saturday)

This workshop explores how human-computer interaction (HCI) perspectives can be more effectively integrated into public IT procurement processes to empower users and extend employees´ wellbeing. We focus particularly on procurement of AI and healthcare systems.

We define four themes for the presentations and discussions at the workshop: 1) HCI-related aspects in public procurement of AI systems; 2) User involvement in public procurement; 3) Work environment aspects in public procurement and  4) HCI-related aspects in public procurement of healthcare systems.

14:15 – 15:30Various casesThe organizers and participants give short presentations of various cases they have been involved in regarding the workshop themes  
15:30 – 16:00Coffee break
16:00 – 17:00Discussion on themesParticipants will be divided into 4 groups to discuss one of four themes.
17:00 – 17:30Reporting on key takeaways and wrap-up Each group will report 3 major takeaways from the discussions.   
We will discuss how to evolve the workshop theme.

Practical information

To participate, participants will be asked to send a short position paper (1-4 pages) giving a brief presentation of one relevant case or project, describing their experiences, perspectives, or interests related to the workshop theme. Submissions should be in PDF format and mailed to marta@ru.is.  

Deadline for submission is the 26th of September 2026 at the latest. Submitted papers will be evaluated within a week from submission.

Participants will be selected based on the short position papers. Submissions will be evaluated for relevance, diversity of perspectives, and potential to contribute to interactive discussions. But the main rule will be that the workshop will be open to interested participants.  

Position papers will not be published in the conference proceedings but will be used as a forum for discussion.
